4th Competition 1998
The 4th International Paderewski Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz
Bydgoszcz, 3rd – 14thNovember 1998
Persistent endeavors of the authorities of the Music Society with the Minister of Culture and the Arts were crowned with the decision to transform the competition into a cyclic musical event under the name The I. J. Paderewski International Piano Competition in Bydgoszcz. It has been decided that as of the present edition of the competition it will be taking place every third year and efforts of young pianists will be judged by an international jury.
The organizers of the competition: the I. J. Paderewski Musical Association – main organizer, the I. J. Paderewski Pomeranian Philharmonic, the F. Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, and editor Henryk Martenka became the Manager of the competition.
The 4th competition took place under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski.
The competition lasted from 3rd to 14th November, 1998.
The Statute of the competition provided for the participation of pianists not older then 27. Fifty nine pianists entered the competition from such countries as: England (1), Armenia (1), Belarus (1), Bosnia and Herzegovina (2), Estonia (2), Finland (1), Israel (1) Japan (8), Yugoslavia (1), Kirghizia (1), Korea (3), Poland (26), Russia (5), United States (1), and Ukraine (5).
Inaugural concert took place on November 6,1998 in the Pomeranian Philharmonic, on the 138th anniversary of Paderewski’s birthday. There performed: Symphonic Orchestra of the Pomeranian Philharmonic conducted by Jerzy Maksymiuk and a soloist Wojciech Kocyan, who played I. J. Paderewski’s piano concerto A-Moll. During the second part of the concert the audience listened to I. J. Paderewski’s Symphony H-Moll “Polonia”.
